Megan +Froi | Star Wars influenced California Castle Wedding | Second Shooting with Ryan Tiet from Cotton Love Studios

This was my first time as a Second Shooter. I was excited to do this shoot with Ryan Tiet from Cotton Love Studios in Los Angeles. This wedding took place on May 4 so I had a feeling it would have some aspect of Star Wars in it. Come on…May the 4th be with you!

Castle Noland was breathtaking. I have always noticed this Castle-like venue in San Luis Obispo, but thought it was a private residence, it is not.

I have known Megan and Froi since they were undergraduate students at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I believe EVERYONE knew that they would get married…it was just a matter of time.

Froi equipped his groomsmen well with their wedding gifts. Everything was Star Wars themed including Cuff links, drinking glasses, etc. Froi of course, had the Yoda cuff links. He was so ready to get married, no real nerves and it was great to see him prepare to marry his love, Megan.  While getting ready, the groomsmen were excited to put on face masks! Needless to day, their skin looked amazing.

When Megan came out for her portraits, she was absolutely stunning! Her dress looked AMAZING on her! She too was so calm and ready to get married.

For the first look, the couple were excited to see each other, but not nervous at all!

Wedding gifts: It was great to see the excitement on Froi’s face when he opened Megan’s gift. It was an aged alcohol and he gave her a beautiful Tiffany bracelet to wear for the wedding.

The wedding party were one of the BEST DRESSED groups that I’ve encountered. Megan and Froi had always been well dressed even as students, so I wasn’t surprised that their wedding attire would be amazing!

After the First Look, Megan and Froi had to quickly change for the Chinese tea ceremony. Megan is Chinese and wanted to fulfill this beautiful ritual BEFORE the wedding ceremony.

Pre-wedding images…excitement was everywhere! The wedding was as beautiful as expected. There were tears shed by the couple as well as the audience members.

Their first dance was so sweet. You could see their true partnership while they danced.

When the newlyweds danced with their parent is when all tears started. Megan and Froi were very close to their parents and all of their family, so this was a very emotional time for all.

The final images are from the Toast section and the beautiful cakes.

Congratulations Megan and Froi!

Mario + Alex | Intercultural Wedding in Park setting | Santa Maria, CA | Intimate Wedding Photographer

Mario and Alex are the sweetest couple! I was very excited to celebrate with them on their special day. These new professors celebrated the advancement of their doctoral degrees, buying a house, moving into their house and planning a wedding!

Here is a little bit of their story from their wedding website:

“We met in Goleta, California, while attending the University of California, Santa Barbara for the Sociology Ph.D. program. One year later, we were both enrolled in the Sociology Ph.D. program, without knowing, until we met at the Imperial Bar in Goleta, CA; where we discovered for the first time our unwavering attraction to one another <3.

After meeting, we went on as many dates as we could while balancing school and work. We travelled together to Los Angeles and Philadelphia, and up and down the Central Coast of California. We spent so much time together, we decided to move in to an apartment in downtown Santa Barbara. Our partnership grew stronger, as we started working together by teaching as a guest lecturer on Beyoncé at Cal Poly. We had more adventures, traveling to Oregon, Modesto, San Francisco, Michigan, and Montréal. After adopting our fur-daughters Nina (Russian blue cat) and Moana (Chihuahua-Dachschund mix), we outgrew our small apartment and moved to Santa Maria, CA.

Mario proposed to Alex in Los Angeles at the Griffith Observatory. Despite the rain, Mario found the perfect spot under the stars in the museum. A few weeks later, Alex proposed to Mario in one of their favorite breakfast spots in Pismo Beach, CA.

From driving cross-country twice, traveling the globe a few times with all of our conference travels and plane trips, and celebrating our anniversary in "Hell's Kitchen," our adventures and our life together has reminded us to persevere, celebrate, celebrate, and love each other to the moon and back.”

Their wedding was romantic, heartfelt, and surrounded by family, friends and fur-babies.

Ethan + Emma | Marriage Proposal | Avila Beach, CA | Beach Wedding Photographer

I received a call from Ethan a few weeks ago telling me about his proposal idea. I was SO excited to work with him to bring his idea to reality. Ethan is from the Central Coast, but his fiancé is from TX. They would occasionally visit Avila Beach to visit his family and his home town. Two times that they have visited Avila, random photographers would come to them to take their photos.  Was going to be the third.

Although she was suspicious of my with the photographer request, she went along with it. I incorporated a few “break the ice” photos but didn’t want to take up too much of their precious time. Ethan and I had a “code phrase” so he would know when I was ready to photograph the “special event”.

He did propose!…and she said YES!

Congratulations Ethan and Emma!

Bryan + Nick | Modern Anniversary Styled Shoot | Shell Beach, CA

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.”

Lao Tzu

Bryan and Nick celebrated their three year anniversary this year. They allowed me to photograph their special time together and capture them renewing their wedding vows in an intimate styled shoot.

They met as students at the University of Denver and never looked back!

I met this amazing couple when Bryan interviewed  for an administrative position at the local university. I was so happy when they moved to the San Luis Obispo area!

This private residence in Shell Beach, CA provided a gorgeous backdrop for the Anniversary Styled Shoot.

Photographing details is always fun to photograph and this couple did not disappoint. The couples take much time into their special details so making sure that these are represented in the images is important.

Bryan and Nick were so cute when they were getting ready. They were very helpful to each other and were so excited to see how the other looked in his suit.

Flamingos are a secret animal that the couple really love. Having flamingo socks were meaningful to them.

It was very romantic for the two to renew their vows. The sentiments said were very heartfelt and at the end, everyone was teary-eyed.

This couple was AMAZING! I loved photographing EVERY MINUTE from their session!

Flourish SLO and Got You Covered Tents & Rentals did not disappoint helping me show their beautiful work and to highlight the couple.

Vons and FlourishSLO helped the cake experience even more beautiful!

THANK YOU to all of the vendors who made this photo shoot a success. i could not have done this without you!

Kristina & Tiphanie / New Year’s Eve intimate wedding / LGBT wedding photographer / Arroyo Grande, CA

It was a beautiful and brisk New Years Eve day for Kristina and Tiphanie’s intimate outdoor garden wedding. The couple planned a simple and elegant destination wedding in Arroyo Grande on the Central Coast of CA.

I received Kristina’s phone call inquiring about my services while I was driving to another event. I pulled over and IMMEDIATELY felt such a connection with her and was so honored that she chose Renoda Campbell Photography to photograph their wedding.

Here’s how they met:

Tiphanie and I were friends many years ago and our lives went in different directions. We reconnected back in 2016 and began spending time together.  Her work relocated her for an 18-month job assignment to TX. Rather than causing a strain on our relationship, this has actually caused us to grow closer. Tiphanie asked me to marry her in Summer of 2018 in Mexico. She arranged for a private lobster and champagne brunch on the beach. She played our favorite songs during brunch... I told her that we live a pretty amazing life... and she told me there was one way to make it even better. Then she pulled out a ring that we had looked at several months prior in Hawaii together. Of course, I said yes!

The Casitas Estates in Arroyo Grande is a gorgeous location for a wedding or private event. The sweeping views and manicured grounds are amazing! Pat G, the owner, was very gracious and welcoming. I look forward to photographing many more weddings at this venue.

Congratulations Kristina and Tiphanie!

Holiday Couples Session | San Luis Obispo | Family photographer

Every year Jeff & Yovani create holiday cards for their friends and families. it is not a tradition in either one of their families to send holiday cards, so they enjoy being the first. This year, they requested a rural setting that overlooked our city. We trekked up one of the smaller hills in the area to get these images. At this Open Space, there are a lot of proposals, picnics and large groups of people who get together to enjoy the city views.  There was even a Miss San Luis Obispo contestant photographing her images up there!

I also wanted for them to experiment with me and do some more romantic couples posing. They were great sports and I think their images came out great!

These two are always fun to photograph because they have fun with each other and don't mind my capturing their fun. I hope their families enjoy these images on the holiday cards!

Karina | Cal Poly Senior | San Luis Obispo | Class of 2017

The month of December is the month of celebrations; Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Winter Solstice to name a few. BUT, it is also a time to celebrate Cal Poly seniors who graduate in the Fall. Approximately 900-1,000 graduates will receive diplomas and turn their tassels to the left while their families, faculty, administrators, and friends watch this accomplishment.

Karina is one of those seniors graduating in December. I met her in 2013 as an excited Freshman (we called them FIRST year's at the university). To see her now as a senior photographer, it gives me such pride. Cal Poly is not an easy university to graduate. She was patient, persistent and practical while attending Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She will graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Liberal Arts. Congratulations Karina and to your family. I celebrate with you!

Alex | San Luis Obispo High School | Class of 2018 | High School Senior Photographer

Alex was a great Senior. He has aspirations to become a mechanical engineer and after college, work in the Automobile industry. I wouldn’t be surprised if he invents and patents a new engine part or something. He also requested to be photographed with this awesome black Ford Mustang convertible. I gladly said yes.

Best of luck with Senior year Alex.

Andrew | San Luis Obispo High School | Class of 2018 | High School Senior Photographer

The session starts out by not finding each other in our local park. Andrew was the FIRST client that arrived at the venue BEFORE I did!…and I’m prompt! The park that I chose is a beautiful park with lots of green grass, a large lake, dog park, and aggressive ducks near the lake wanting to be fed.

Andrew was a true joy. His choice of fun, cool and retro outfits matched his personality. Seeing the true beauty in each of my clients in their own way, energizes me at every session. He needed very little direction and showed off some of his own poses towards the end of the session.

He plans on attending university in CA after High School and studying engineering. After college, Andrew aspires to become a Special Effects engineer. Having worked in Television and Film, I believe he will enjoy his chosen career. I look forward to him earning  his first Academy Award!

Best of luck with Senior year Andrew and please let me know which university you decide.

Matthew | San Luis Obispo High School | Class of 2018 | High School Senior photographer

Matthew and I went on an adventure for his senior portraits. We decided to shoot at the Pismo Beach Pier, which is under construction!

We actually went around the construction and found great locations where he could be photographed. We found lots of pillars (wood and metal) to give us different textures in the images.

In speaking with Matthew, he wants to go to university to study engineering. We are so fortunate in San Luis Obispo that our local university is in the Top 3 for Engineering and Architecture. Since he loves San Luis Obispo and Engineering, his dream school is our local university, Cal Poly (www.calpoly.edu)

Best of luck with Senior year Matthew. Let me know which college you choose. (wink, wink).

Luca | San Luis Obispo High School | Class of 2018 | High School Senior photographer

“His name is Luca…” Does anyone know of this song by the singer, Suzanne Vega? When I initially saw this high school senior’s name, I started humming the song. Sad song, but uses a cool name.

I had a fun time with Luca. He was very specific on the area where he wanted to be photographed, so I took on the challenge. We came to an agreement and I think the images came out great!

I was excited to hear what Luca wanted to do post-graduation. He plans on being a politician. This is a really tough job, but we need strong young leaders right now. I am confident that he will succeed. He is currently an officer in Youth and Government (just like one of my previous seniors, Eva).

Y & G gives high school students an introduction to legislation (researching, writing bills and implementation among other parts of the political process).

Best of luck with Senior year Luca. Let me know which college you choose.

Michael | San Luis Obispo High School | Class of 2018 | High School Senior Photographer

I am proud to say that I photographed the last three Moore sons for their high school senior portraits!

Michael plans to study Business with a Sports Management concentration. He will do well in this field due to his love of sports (and making money!) .  His brothers and he played Varsity basketball at the high school and he and one other brother played Varsity football.

I had a feeling that Michael wasn’t too interested in having his portraits taken, but he did very well during his session and I tried to make it as painless as possible for him.

Michael, let me know which university you choose! Have a great senior year! I may see you again to photograph YOU at a basketball game!

Eva | San Luis Obispo High School | Class of 2018 | High School Senior Photographer

Eva and my daughter were high school participants of Youth & Government. I loved hearing young adults learning about and wanting to get involved in the political process.

I had a BLAST with Eva! She totally rocked it. The location she chose had fun geometric shapes and so did her clothing! She had a vision and it worked out well.

I love it when students have some idea about what they want to study at university.  Eva wants to study the Humanities. I do see law in her future as well. Okay, enough of my future predictions. Eva, have a great Senior year and let know which Liberal Arts college you choose.

The Erbys | San Luis Obispo Family photographer | Surprise Baby Announcement | San Luis Obispo

Katie wanted to surprise her husband LaDell alerting him in an original way that she was pregnant with their 3rd child. I called it a baby-posal! I was SO EXCITED to be part of the surprise. This was photographed in early July, but I had to wait until the end of her first trimester to blog these beautiful images.

Katie gave me the plan:

  1. She would tell LaDell that they were taking family photos (only).
  2. At the end of the family session, I would tell him that I wanted something special for my website and for him to write 3 things on a placard that he loved about her…and she would write three things that she loved about him…but Katie’s message would not quite give her 3 things, but that he was going to be a dad again!
  3. When we were done with the traditional family session, I followed the plan. LaDell was so cute carefully writing the three things that he loved about Katie. Luckily, their younger daughters could not read the placards or they would have blown the surprise.

The couple were facing back-to-back. When I finally asked the two to turn around to face each other, the first thing LaDell said was “you didn’t write down three things!” (You'll notice his thinking pattern in the images.) When he finally read Katie’s sign, he wasn’t sure if it was true and when she said it was true, I had tears in my eyes. It was the sweetest family moment. Their two daughters, ages 4 and 2 were not quite sure what was going on, but all of the adults were so excited!

Congratulations Erby family! I look forward to meeting the littlest one in 2018!

Maya | High School Senior Portrait Photographer | San Luis Obispo High School | Class of 2018

As a photographer, you never know if a high school senior is going to have a great look in front of the camera. I am always pleasantly surprised when these seniors SLAY their sessions. I have been so fortunate that each one does an amazing job!

Maya is no exception. She came dressed in a Free People "esque" dress and was amazing! So great, that I felt inspired to blog her pictures in black and white to make an even greater statement! I also loved her freckles, so kept them in each image.

Maya is regal and confident. She knows what she wants to do for her career…and she will be one of the individuals improving our society and our world.

She is my 3rd or 4th student that aspires to be a doctor! This means lots of schooling, and very challenging classes. The San Luis Obispo Class of 2018 has really impressed me so far, and school has just started!

Best of luck during your senior year Maya and please let me know which college you choose!

Amber + Red | Non-traditional wedding photographer | San Luis Obispo

Photographing intimate weddings, weddings lasting less than 5 hours and with less that 50 people is something I truly enjoy. Although I photograph many traditional weddings, my newest clients, Amber + Red had a totally different concept about their special day. Their wedding was a Faery themed wedding. The guests dressed as woodland creatures, while others dressed in really fun costumes.

Amber and Red met years ago through friends in San Luis Obispo, CA. Although they have now moved to the Pacific Northwest, San Luis Obispo is still one of their favorite places. They shared their love of this town through this special ceremony.

Wishing you both a lifetime of happiness!

Lukas | San Luis Obispo High School | Class of 2018

Lukas!!!!! I had such a great time with Lukas. As a mom, I appreciate courteous and communicative people. Lukas is one of those individuals.  During our session, we inadvertently blocked walkways and he greeted almost every person before he moved out of the way.

Lukas plans to study Pre-Med and will go out into the world to help his community. He is good at Math and Science, but also has the proper communication skills to work in the Pre-Med profession. I cannot stress the importance of bedside manner when one wants to possibly become a doctor. By the way he treated the general public during the session, he will be a great physician.

Best of luck Lukas. Let me know which university you choose and best of luck with your noble career.

Elizabeth + Ryan | 1950’s Vintage Destination Wedding | Atascadero, CA

As a wedding photographer in San Luis Obispo, each wedding is different and beautiful in its own way. I enjoy photographing non-traditional as well as traditional intimate weddings. Elizabeth and Ryan’s wedding was a 1950’s inspired destination wedding. The couple enjoy visiting San Luis Obispo county so it was perfect for them to have a casual home wedding in this area.

The happy couple met working together at a community college in Southern California. Both were sign language interpreters who interpreted a German class for a Deaf student. The rest…was history…

In addition to their love for sign language, the couple love crafting. The cactus canvas image, created by our groom Ryan, was for guests to sign in. Cacti paintings created by Ryan were all over the grounds, which were really beautiful. In lieu of traditional flowers, one of Elizabeth’s friends created her paper bouquet as well as paper flowers for Elizabeth’s veil and Ryan’s boutonniere.

The wedding ceremony and reception were emotional, and full of support and love from the couple and their guests. During the ceremony, the couple created a time capsule that was buried on the grounds and the couple would come back in 10 years to celebrate.

I also enjoy seeing the bride and groom’s culture infused into the wedding ceremony.  The couple incorporated an Indonesian tradition of joining the bride and groom’s hands, which was beautiful as well. They also included the red cord around the bride’s ring with a small sentiment of Ryan’s blessing to her.

All guests and couple had a great time. Congratulations Elizabeth and Ryan!

Britney | Senior Photography | SLOHS | Class of 2018

As soon as I walked onto the Avila Pier, I noticed Britney and her parents looking over the side of the pier. Unfortunately we didn't see any whales that evening.  It is my goal to arrive at least 15 minutes early to every session. It was a very bright evening, so I was excited to have two photo assistants (aka parents) and kept them busy working while watching their beautiful and confident daughter have her photos taken. Britney was the perfect model! She smiled on cue and could “smize” (smile with her eyes) whenever I needed her to.

I enjoy taking the time to speak with every senior during the session. In speaking with Britney, her goal is to attend university and become a CPA. I was so impressed with her goals and aspirations. I see her getting involved in the college accounting clubs as well as other business clubs. I know she will be very successful in all that she chooses to do.

Britney, wishing you the best of luck in your senior year and let me know which university you choose!

Unkee | Pet Portrait Photography | San Luis Obispo

I was truly honored to be asked to photograph 14-year old Unkee.  Unkee is so sweet, and calm around children, adults and other dogs. Due to his age, my client asked if I would have a mini-session with him and his buddy, Danny. Although Unkee had a little difficulty getting up in some instances, he was still full of energy and spirit. Thank you for allowing me to photograph you Unkee!
