Cal Poly Black Commencement | Special Events Photography | San Luis Obispo, CA

For the past 29 years, Cal Poly (San Luis Obispo) has celebrated the graduating African American students by honoring them with a Black Commencement ceremony held on the Friday before the larger commencements. At Cal Poly, the African American student population has been less than 1% of the general student population (147 students of21,300 students according to the Cal Poly 2017 PolyView) for a few years now. The graduating committee worked really hard to make this event a success for this small and prestigious group. The theme for this graduating class was “Love, Integrity and Enlightenment.” The event started off with the Sitkoto Drummers. Their style of African drumming shaped how the rest of the commencement would be, soulful and lively. The keynote speaker was Bri Blue. Her keynote and take-aways for the graduating seniors was not just for the students, but for all who attended. One nugget of information that I will remember is “flowers wilt, be the tree” in all that you try to accomplish. The students are always so excited to receive their stoles made of kente cloth woven from Ghanaian craftsmen. The traditions of this commencement like many of the other cultural commencements (Chicana-Latino, Native American, Middle Eastern, Lavender and Asian Pacific Islander) are very heart felt and family focused. I look forward to next year’s festivities.

Natalie | College Senior Photography Session | San Luis Obispo, CA

I met Natalie as a first year Industrial Technology & Packaging major for the Orfalea College of Business (OCOB) at California Polytechnic State University. From the first time that I met her, I had a feeling that she would make an impact on the university before she graduated. I got to know her best in her second year. She was always calm, composed, answered questions carefully, but in depth and had an amazing smile. Natalie worked with OCOB staff to help launch the Multicultural Business Program , and served as a Peer Advisor for the College of Business for two years. Congratulations Natalie on your accomplishments. I am so proud of you!

Student Academic Services EOP Service Awards | San Luis Obispo Event Photographer | Cal Poly

It is an honor every year to photograph the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP) Service Awards. There usually isn’t a dry eye in the house after these first generation, low-income graduating students offer their stories of adversity, strength and determination. They offer hope to the other students who are still trying to be successful at Cal Poly. The validate the difficult work that the staff do--working with these students to make sure that they are successful. The administration, faculty, staff and the students are present to cheer on each other and offer love and support as they leave for the workplace. Each graduating senior receives a gold EOP graduation stole that the students wear with pride. As one of the Advisors for these students, I was also fortunate enough to offer their graduation stoles to wear at commencement as seen in the last photo. Congratulations Seniors!

Emily, Alpha Chi Omega | Renoda Campbell Photography Senior photographer | Cal Poly

I have known the beautiful Emily since her second year at Cal Poly. She is an amazing leader, has a vivacious personality and is a loyal friend.

She has already received a GREAT job offer after college in the field that she wants!

We met while I was advisor for Sorority/Fraternity Life  at Cal Poly and she served on the Panhellenic Board. Serving as Panhellenic Advisor was one of my favorite positions at Cal Poly. I had the opportunity to work with young women who worked on improving their leadership and communication skills as well as collaborating with the male fraternities and multicultural greek organizations. It wasn’t easy all of the time, but she managed with grace and calmness. She took all of her positions to the highest degree of professionalism and fun.

Best of luck and love to Emily in all of her future endeavors, congratulations on your graduation and please keep in touch! <3

President’s Diversity Awards | San Luis Obispo Event Photographer | Cal Poly

The Cal Poly President’s Diversity Awards acknowledges faculty, staff, individual students, student clubs and staff/faculty organizations at Cal Poly who are attempting to make the university a more diverse and inclusive environment.

It was a packed house at the Kennedy Library Atrium to celebrate those individuals. Individuals came from all over our large campus to celebrate. There were over 80 applications of well-earned Cal Poly members seeking acknowledgement this year. This was the largest number of submissions in its history. I feel honored to attend. I was fortunate enough to be recognized as the Outstanding staff member in 2015.

Everyone who received an award were surprised and honored. Congratulations awardees.

Black Student Union “Decades” Fashion Show | San Luis Obispo Event Photographer | Cal Poly

The Cal Poly Black Student Union team worked very hard to make their May 2016 fashion show a success. The theme was “Decades”. There was a combination of music videos and fashion for every era: African cultural attire, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and current/future fashion. As a San Luis Obispo Events photographer, it was a lot of fun to watch and photograph.

Urban Optics EyeWear donated frames for the various eras.

Once the fashion show ended, there was a performance by BSU dancers and students socialized, asked questions about the fashions and looked at the clothing up close.

All enjoyed the activities and the delicious desserts from SeaBreeze Cupcakes.

#I Am Cal Poly | San Luis Obispo Event Photographer | Cal Poly

I was so proud of Q, C and J for working on this campaign. This campaign has really helped bring diversity to the forefront on this campus. It was great seeing so many excited faculty, staff and students attend and take pride in what was displayed.

The testimonials were thoughtful and all guests appreciative. I also look forward to being one of the first who receives the book!

Congratulations to all who participated.

Malcolm | Renoda Campbell Photography Portrait photographer | Cal Poly

I serve many college “kids” in my current line of work… approximately 500 of them. Malcolm is one student at Cal Poly that I am so proud to call one of "my kids".

Malcolm and I always get into really in depth conversations about politics...you name it! For the Fall 2016 semester, he has been chosen to represent California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, as a Panetta Congressional Intern

I remember when he said he wanted to apply for this internship. Only one student per California State University institution is chosen for this amazing opportunity. I remember Interview #1; he had such confidence in his answers and if he didn’t get the internship, he KNEW he did his best. He then was asked back for Interview #2 with the institute board members. I could see that he was nervous, but he was ready.

His charming and charismatic demeanor as well as his interest in governmental issues won them over! When he mentioned to me that he was chosen as the recipient, I was ELATED, and wanted to take photos of him.

Side note: He is stared at quite a bit on campus if you don’t know him. Does he resemble a young Barack Obama to you?

Congratulations Malcolm! I look forward to hearing your amazing stories upon your return.

Pride Prom | San Luis Obispo Event Photographer | Cal Poly

I have been the San Luis Obispo Special Events photographer for the Cal Poly’s Pride Prom since its inception in 2007. I truly enjoy working with the students to create such a fun event. The music is en pointe and I am also dancing in my photo spot while the students are dancing! The students and staff plan this event for up to six months to create a great theme, secure vendors and make/buy the perfect outfits!

The theme this year was “video characters”. Look at the fun items at the prop table that guests could use to enhance their photos. There were Pac Man characters, rainbow boas, and very large sunglasses props to choose. The four prom court members received jeweled Xbox controllers.

Jasmine | San Luis Obispo Senior Portraits | Cal Poly

Renoda Campbell Photography, San Luis Obispo Senior photographer, Senior photography, #rcpslo #calpoly

Jasmine is an a-m-a-z-i-n-g woman. She will be finishing up her Bachelor of Science degree from the Cal Poly College of Architecture & Environmental Design with a major in Construction Management with two minors in City and Regional Planning and Real Property Development. That’s impressive to say!

I knew she would be a star at Cal Poly! We met on her first day of visiting Cal Poly. We have maintained a mentor/mentee/surrogate mom relationship ever since we first spoke to each other. I was truly honored when she asked if I would be her Senior portraits photographer. I knew she would have many great poses and that we would both have fun; I was right.

The key for my senior photography work is to make my client feel at ease. When you already know the client, the feeling of being “comfortable” is a faster process than when you don’t know the photographer.

Thank you Jasmine, and best of luck to you.

Multicultural Sorority Family Portraits | Greek Life Sisterhood Group Photos | San Luis Obispo | Cal Poly

Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority, Inc. is an amazing social greek multicultural organization on the Cal Poly campus. Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority Inc. started in 1998, which in the scheme of sorority life, is later than the traditional organizations, and continues to blossom every year on many campuses.

Due to their size, usually between 8-25 members, every member really does know every sister and relies on each and every one of them when they need support or to challenge someone when needed. Each woman usually holds more than one office, but they do it efficiently and effectively.

I enjoyed being that “observer” photographing these women as they enjoy their sisterhood. This is one of the reasons that I enjoy being a portrait photographer in San Luis Obispo, CA . I am a member of a sorority as well and believe in the principles that were established when the various organizations were founded. These photos reflect the organization's members love and appreciation for one another, creating that "family" and sense of community on the Cal Poly campus. The images consist of showing “line sisters”, big and little sisters, “grandmothers” with her younger members, and showing their sorority hand symbol with pride.

The philanthropy and community service projects revolve around the California Head Start Program. Teaching the younger generations to enjoy and appreciate education and to make sure that they receive and WANT one, is crucial to the organization’s mission. If you’d like to find out more about Lambda Sigma Gamma (LSG) on Cal Poly's campus, take a look at the link.

Christopher Senior Photos | San Luis Obispo Senior Photography | Class of 2016

I work with student athletes occasionally, but Christopher was different from the rest.

Christopher is one of THE busiest persons that I know. Although he was busy everyday, he managed to stop what he was doing to say hello and give me a hug. He juggled two businesses as well as serving as starting quarterback for the Cal Poly Football team while maintaining full-time student status.

I could tell he lives, sleeps and breathes football. He worked his way up the ranks to become quarterback and #1 in many university records. All of his hard work paid off. The day after this photo shoot, he signed on as a free-agent for the Dallas Cowboys. I don’t know what that means, but it’s a big deal for him, Cal Poly football and Dallas fans.

This photo shoot was so meaningful because his love for football and his university shined through. He was closing one chapter of his football career with the hopes of starting another chapter with the NFL...which he accomplished. Best of luck Christopher! Make all of us proud!

Cal Poly Service Awards 2016

040416_Cal Poly Service Awards

Whenever I think of doing "service", I think of volunteering for a charitable organization. How about you?  Well, It was a great day celebrating a different type of service.  The Cal Poly Staff, Faculty and Administrators were honored for their 10 to 45 yrs of service to the university. Although they are paid, these honorees go above and beyond to serve the students and the California State University values. Congratulations to the honorees. It was a fun event! I do a lot of volunteer work at Cal Poly myself. I would like to know in the comments what type of service you will do (paid or non-paid) within the next six months.
